Episode four: QiGong

The first time I ever saw someone practice anything like Qigong was in New York City. It was Washington Square Park, and I remember thinking the slow movements and rhythm were beautiful. I knew it was Tai Chi they were practicing, but other than the name and its Chinese origin, and I knew nothing about it. Considering how inquisitive I am, I am surprised I never found out more until now. Maybe I was a little shy to convey my interests and ask at the time.

When I met Kamau, who has been practicing Qigong for over ten years, I was delighted to learn from him. To witness him fully embrace this rich practice from another culture as part of his life presented itself to me at a time where we see so much Asian hate and violence broke my heart. Learning from him felt like my own personal protest of what was happening back home.

The lessons themselves taught me even more. I thought Tai Chi or Qigong would be a chill, meditative experience because it was slow movements. Not at all. After practicing with Kamau, I realized it’s so much more. Take a look. Much love to all my Asian brothers and sisters around the world. I see you, love you, and support you.

Thank you, Kamau, for teaching me to be present.
